About

I am a senior researcher and lecturer in the areas of criminal justice and criminal psychology, based in the Division of Psychology and Centre for Applied Criminology at Birmingham City University.

I am currently Principal Investigator on the ESRC ‘Enrichment activities? Arts, creativity and spirituality in criminal justice systems’ Seminar Series beginning late 2012

I also currently lead a number of evaluations of programmes for offenders, and in addition lead the strategies for research impact and research evaluation across the Faculty of Education, Law, and Social Sciences at BCU.

Current PhD students:
Dean Wilkinson – Mental health and crime http://worc.academia.edu/DeanWilkinson
David Veal – Arson in prisons

I am an expert in the evaluation of programmes for offenders, designing and conducting research evaluations in prisons and the community both with offenders and those at risk of offending. Since 2001 I have worked on a range of evaluations, and over the past four years this work has focused on assessing the impact of the arts and other non-traditional programmes for offenders, and on investigating the needs of women in prison. In 2011 I was presented with a commendation award from the Howard League for Penal Reform for my research on the arts in prisons.

I publish widely in academic and professional arenas, and serve on the editorial boards of a number of academic journals:
Howard Journal of Criminal Justice http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1111/(ISSN)1468-2311
Forensic Update http://www.bpsshop.org.uk/Forensic-Update-No-106-April-2012-P1987.aspx
Journal of Social Criminology http://socialcriminology.webs.com/
Journal of Criminal Psychology

I have recently been commissioned by Routledge to write a text on research methods in Criminology, due for publication in 2013.
